Dorothea R. Calvano was admitted to practice law in 2002, and since that time has concentrated her work in the defense of high-stakes, complex medical malpractice actions, representation of long-term care and skilled nursing facilities, health and hospital law and general insurance defense.  She has been an Associate with Roberts, Carroll, Feldstein & Peirce since May, 2008.  Prior to joining the firm, she practiced as an Associate with another firm in Downtown Providence also specializing in medical malpractice defense.  Ms. Calvano successfully defended one of Rhode Island’s specialty-care hospitals to favorable jury verdict as lead counsel in Providence County Superior Court, and she has served as co-counsel on two Superior Court jury trials, both to favorable verdict.   

 

Ms. Calvano has been invited to speak and give presentations on behalf of Rhode Island’s major hospital and healthcare networks, addressing physicians, administrators and allied health care professionals on legal topics germane to their professions.  She has experience in managing medical liability cases in a vast array of specialties.  She has successfully counseled physician-clients as well as hospital administrators and insurance adjusters through several high-stakes mediations, both court-annexed and private, resulting in favorable outcomes for her clients.

 

In addition to regularly arguing before distinguished judges of the Rhode Island Superior Court, Ms. Calvano appears before the Rhode Island Commission for Human Rights, successfully defending allegations of discrimination sounding in the Americans with Disabilities Act.  Ms. Calvano also defends professional malpractice cases arising in Federal Court and has authored memoranda for argument which resulted in summary judgment and dismissal of claims regarding fraud and violation of the Securities Exchange Act. 

 

Born in Hinsdale, Illinois, Ms. Calvano came to Rhode Island in 1983, and graduated from East Greenwich High School in 1995.  She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Politics (cum laude) from Saint Anselm College, in Manchester, NH, in 1999.  During her undergraduate years, Ms. Calvano was inducted into the Pi Sigma Honor Society, served devotedly as News Editor on the student newspaper, and was elected Captain of the women’s crew team.  Ms. Calvano went on to earn her Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School, in Boston, MA, in 2002.  While in Boston, Ms. Calvano worked at the famous Bull & Finch Pub, in addition to performing internships at the State House on Beacon Hill.  Ms. Calvano also performed a lengthy internship with the Rhode Island Public Defenders’ Office, practicing as a “Rule 9” attorney, both in Providence Superior Court and Kent  Superior and District Court, before completing her legal education. 

 

Ms. Calvano is an avid long-distance runner, having competed in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC, as well as the Las Vegas Marathon.
